What is Sports Dentistry?

It is important to see a dentist specially trained in sports dentistry for this specific type of dental care. Dr. McGibony is trained to diagnose, treat and prevent oral and facial athletic injuries and related disorders. Common orofacial injuries include tooth intrusions, luxations, crown and root fractures, complete avulsions, and dental-facial fractures.

Contact sports such as football, boxing, wrestling, hockey, and martial arts can result in orofacial trauma if athletes do not take the proper precautions. Orofacial injuries also occur in other “non-contact” sports such as baseball, basketball, bicycling, skateboarding, racquetball and surfing.

Mouthguards For Dental Protection and Enhanced Performance

To protect teeth, an athlete's most important preventative measure is a properly fitted mouth guard. The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) currently requires mouth guards in football, hockey, and lacrosse, and also for wrestlers who wear braces. The American Dentistry Association recommends the use of mouthguards in more than 30 other athletic activities as well.

Custom dental mouth guards have been demonstrated to provide the greatest amount of protection from oral injury. At McGibony and Associates, we provide custom ArmourBite® mouthguards to protect athletes from trauma to the teeth, lips, gums, tongue and mucosa. These mouthguards work to cushion blows to the extent of providing protection to the tempormandibular joint, and even aid in prevention of concussions. They have also been shown to enhance sports performance by preventing clenching and keeping airways clear.

Our mouthguards are customized for a close, comfortable fit allowing for easy breathing and speaking. We provide different models to suit a variety of sports. These mouth guards are far superior to those available over the counter in sporting goods stores, which can be uncomfortable and ineffective. A properly fitted mouth guard is important for both adults and children. For younger athletes, the ArmourBite® guard is designed with room for erupting teeth and braces.

Injury Treatment

When an athlete experiences a dental injury, he or she should see the dentist as soon as possible. Chipped or cracked teeth can often be treated with bonding, but a more complex treatment is sometimes required. A tooth that has been knocked out can be re-implanted, but only if the dentist can see the patient within a 30-minute window of time. Patients should not try to move or implant a displaced tooth into the socket. Instead, they should contact a dentist immediately.
